The Rio de Janeiro City Hall has taken another step toward making the city a benchmark for innovation and technology in Latin America. At an event held at Porto Marvalley, Mayor Eduardo Paes, alongside Deputy Mayor Eduardo Cavaliere, IplanRio President João Carabetta, and X – The Moonshot Factory CEO Astro Teller, signed an unprecedented partnership with Alphabet, Google's parent company.
The initiative, coordinated by IplanRio, marks the beginning of the Rio AI City, a project that will combine connectivity, sustainability, energy, and urban planning to transform Rio into one of the smartest cities in the world.
During the launch, Mayor Eduardo Paes highlighted that the cooperation represents a historic breakthrough for the city's economic and social development. “We are paving the way for a new phase of urban innovation, with technology at the service of the citizen. Rio will be the first municipality in Latin America to have urban infrastructure guided by artificial intelligence,” the mayor stated.
Among the projects presented is Tapestry, an X technology focused on the modernization and reliability of the power grid, which is essential for the operation of Rio AI City. Powered by artificial intelligence, the platform will be responsible for mapping, predicting, and optimizing energy consumption, allowing the entire operation to be sustained by 100% renewable energy.
Another highlight is the implementation of Taara, a technology that transmits data via light beams at fiber-optic speeds, bringing connectivity to schools, hospitals, and health units in hard-to-reach areas. The initiative promises to expand the reach of high-speed internet and strengthen security and emergency systems throughout the city.
In the urban sector, Anori will be used to revolutionize the building permit process by digitizing all urban planning legislation and reducing analysis time from months to minutes. Meanwhile, the Materraproject, in partnership with Comlurb, will apply AI to optimize the sorting of recyclable waste, increasing the city's recycling rate and creating new opportunities in the circular economy.
For IplanRio president João Carabetta, the company's role in building this partnership highlights the leading role of public technology in the city's transformation. “Rio AI City is the pillar that provides Rio with the data and clean energy infrastructure that the world's largest tech companies demand, attracting investment, innovation, and talent. It is a milestone for the sustainable development of Rio de Janeiro,” he noted.
IplanRio’s involvement was decisive in the technical and strategic coordination of the agreement, which also included the Civil Cabinet, Comlurb, and the municipal secretariats for Urban and Economic Development (SMDUE), Environment and Climate (SMAC), and Infrastructure. The partnership expands the reach of the digital transformation initiated by the City Hall, positioning Rio as a global benchmark in smart urban solutions.
With this initiative, the city enters a new chapter in its history, where technology, sustainability, and innovation work hand in hand to improve the lives of Rio's residents and establish Rio de Janeiro as a global hub for artificial intelligence and urban development.
